Amy Pokela: Most of the executive directors in this research described the same short list of names. The people who host, the people who ask, the people who show up early. Then there was often a longer list of members who came to meetings, voted, and went home.

Amy Pokela: When board members were asked about it directly, many did not describe a lack of interest. They described not knowing what they were supposed to do.
